House-in-a-barn

In close collaboration with architect friends, new living space is to be created in a barn in Nüstenbach, a village characterised by agriculture. The concept envisages integrating a ‘house within a house’ in the southern part of the existing building, while the northern part will continue to be used as a barn. Access is provided on the east side in the usable area of the barn. The new living area, which extends over three storeys, is accessed from there. A central staircase forms the centrepiece of the living space and connects the floors with each other: on the lower floor there is a spacious living and dining area as well as a study, on the upper floor four rooms and a bathroom are grouped around a hallway. The top floor serves as a storage area and gallery. The material and construction are based on the existing building, with the existing façade panels being replaced by corrugated sheet metal. The façade openings are also based on the formats typical of the typology. The intervention within the existing cubature does not change the grain of the village on the site of the barn, merely enhancing its appearance.
